Five meters, 325 steps, 40 sculptures.

I wanted to create stairs, I wanted to weld, and I wanted to collaborate with SunnySideUp.

“In this installation, set within the solemn walls of an 11th-century chapel, the artist invites us on a spiritual journey. The 325 3D-printed steps, seemingly floating in the air, are delicately supported by an invisible steel structure, which serves to enhance the illusion of weightlessness. The path draws the viewer upward, physically and metaphorically, as if ascending towards something beyond the tangible world.

The collaboration with SunnySideUp brings a unique interplay of craftsmanship and contemplation. Each of the 40 sculptures marks a point of reflection along the way, encouraging moments of pause and introspection. The steps, though modern in their fabrication, seamlessly integrate into the ancient surroundings, creating a dialogue between the sacred space and the contemporary vision.

Here, movement becomes a meditation. The viewer is invited to contemplate the connection between the earthly and the ethereal, guided by a staircase that defies gravity and logic, yet feels deeply rooted in the timeless search for meaning. This installation transcends mere aesthetics, offering an experience where art, architecture, and the spiritual merge into one continuous ascent.”

Residency

The installation was completed during a 7-day creative residency held in a 11th-century chapel.

Over the course of the week, the chapel was transformed into a vibrant studio where the artists — Benjamin, Lavrans, Dunne, David, Simon, Marie & Marie, — worked on various projects, including painting, drawing, stained glass, music, and sculpture.
